The Cowrie
Medallion

Each cowrie shell is hand-selected from the beaches of Cape Coast, drilled with precision, and strung on waxed cotton thread using a technique passed down through three generations of the Amafo family. The medallion centerpiece is cast in recycled brass by master metalworker Kofi Asante in Kumasi.

Meet the Hands
Behind the Craft

Ama Amafo learned cowrie shell stringing from her grandmother in Cape Coast when she was seven years old. Today, she leads a collective of twelve women, each specializing in a different technique.

"Every shell tells a story. We don't just make necklaces — we weave the ocean, the earth, and the hands of our mothers into each piece. When you wear a cowrie medallion, you carry that story."

Her process: Each shell is hand-drilled with a tool her grandfather forged. Strands are wax-coated for durability. Every medallion is cast using recycled brass from old scales and vessels.
